Philippians 4:10-14
(Philippians 4:10-14)
But I
rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath
flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity. Not
that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am,
therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased,
and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to
be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which
strengtheneth me. Notwithstanding ye have well
done, that ye did communicate with my affliction.
Philippi Church was a church pioneered during Paul's second missionary journey.
Paul expresses his gratitude by receiving contributions from the Saints of
Philippi Church. At that time, Paul went to Jerusalem after the third
missionary trip and was taken by the Jews and then by the Roman soldiers. At
that time he could have been released, but he appealed to the emperor, so he
went to Rome. When he went to Rome, there were many prisoners, so light
prisoners, especially Roman citizens, rented a house and made house arrest.
Paul was a
Roman citizen from the time he was born, so he was not entirely imprisoned and
was under house arrest. Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon are
called prison letters, which were written by Paul when he was under house
arrest in Rome. Paul was under house arrest and needed a living cost. It seems
that the Philippian Church neglected to help Paul for a while, and after a long
time sent a love offering to Paul. 『I
rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath
flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity』 Paul said, "The Philippian church tried to send a gift to him
from the past, but after not getting a chance, it was finally sent through
Evabrodido."
Paul said he was not complaining because he was in need, that is,
because it was difficult because he had no money. Rather, he confesses that he
has learned to be self-sufficient in all circumstances. Paul rephrases what he
said in verse 11 in verse 12. Paul said that he knows how to be humble and
knows how to be rich. He said that he would not be overly anxious, discouraged,
or obsessed, even though he was in trouble, without money, and hard, and he did
not fall with pride or carelessness, even if he became rich in material
matters.
Paul
confessed that he had learned the secret to self-sufficiency and proper
conduct, no matter what circumstances, rich or lacking. So in verse 10, Paul
said, "I rejoice greatly in the Lord." He said, "It was not
because of the money, but because of the love and interest of the Saints in
Philippi." 2 Corinthians 1:8-9『 For we would not, brethren, have
you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out
of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: But we
had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves,
but in God which raiseth the dead: 』
This is the apostle Paul's third letter to the
Corinthian Church. This is to remember what happened in Asia. Rather than
solving the problem when it happened, it's about thinking why this happened to
me. This is "because we do not believe in ourselves, but only the God who
raises the dead will rely".
